We're all aware of the sporting phenomenon's that will be taking over our nation's summer that is London 2012. However for those young thrill-seekers, it's just not enough. Revealed from new research by sweet brand Mega Mouth®, almost two thirds (62%) of young people think they'll be more likely to watch the Olympics when more extreme sports like skateboarding are on offer.
Because of the findings, Mega Mouth® has unveiled the UK's largest skateboard which should give British young people something to get genuinely excited about.
It's staggering measurements of seven metres in length, two and a half metres in width and one metre high, the monstrous board weighs 250kg - as much as a baby African elephant. The giant skateboard was created by a team of six engineers and took a total of 300 hours to complete. It also can host up to 30 children at one time.
Mega Mouth® enlisted their own fans to ensure the creation of the board was a collaborative effort. Back at the start of June the brand launched a month-long nationwide search, via an extra-curricular junior schools partnership, and through its own website, www.megamouth.com, to find a talented young artist to design the underside of the deck. The winning entry belonged to 10-year-old Kate Emslex from Worcester (pictured next to her design and with British under-14 skateboard champ (the Tony Hawkes of the future) Matty Carlise)
Commenting on the UK's largest skateboard, Matty said, “This is the most awesome board I’ve ever seen and I think it’s fantastic that so many kids are keen to see skateboarders compete on such a grand stage. There has been a real buzz surrounding the Olympics over the past couple of years but as far as I’m concerned the debate on whether the sport should be included in the games is over. I want in for 2016”.
Sarah Sibley, spokesperson for Mega Mouth®, said: “We’re always talking to British kids to stay abreast of the latest crazes and trends, and ‘extreme’ is big news right now – in terms of both sweets and sports.
"Mega Mouth® is a sweet for the street and what better way to celebrate this than with the creation of the UK’s largest skateboard? Skateboarding is a sporting phenomenon that was born on, and continues to thrive on the streets – and hopefully one day, we’ll see it on a much bigger stage.”
The UK’s largest skateboard will be exhibited in the UK’s largest indoor skate park, Rampworx, in Liverpool from July.
