Do you feel older people get more respect than you? Do you feel older people don’t understand you, or that they don’t see the positive things young people do?

Age discrimination is the most widely experienced form of discrimination faced by people in the UK. Yet too often it goes unnoticed and unchallenged.

Well, yesterday saw the launch of a fab new project called Everyone’s Future. The project, which will be jointly run by Vibe Experience and Age Concern Cardiff and The vale of Glamorgan, will highlight and challenge age discrimination experienced by both young and old people, and will feature interactive workshops and events that will challenge negative stereotypes of these groups.  From this, intergenerational projects will be developed where older and younger people work together.

Sponsored by Jane Hutt AM, the Big Lottery funded Everyone’s Future will run for two years and will work with schools and youth clubs, and well as older people’s clubs and societies across the Vale and Cardiff .

Hannah Lewis, Age Equality Worker for Age Concern Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan outlined the aims of “Everyone’s Future”.

“Society has a stereotypical image of older and younger people. Both generations can be seen as having little to offer. Our research has shown that there is a confused relationship between the two generations and this has led to social isolation and a breakdown in community relations.”

“By launching “Everyone’s Future” it will ensure that negative stereotypes of older and younger people challenged and we hope to reduce age discrimination and get these groups to work together to make a better future for all.”

If you want more info on the project then you can contact Louise David, Age Equality Worker (Young people) at louise@vibeexperience.com or Hannah Lewis, Age Equality Worker (Older People) on Hannah.lewis@age-concern-cardiff.org.uk
